Integrating openEHR with Epic lessons from Maastricht UMC+

On 8 June 2026 I spoke in Zürich about integrating openEHR with Epic, drawing on our experience at Maastricht UMC+.

My message: an EHR like Epic is powerful for clinical workflows, but it remains an application. Make your data subordinate to it and you gradually lose semantics, reusability and control over your own data. The answer is data-centric, store clinical data in a vendor-neutral openEHR layer and let applications, Epic included, consume it. Not “Epic or openEHR”, but “Epic, unless”: Epic for the workflow, openEHR for the data that must outlive any single system.
